As the end of the year is almost here, I thought I would look back and some of my best photographs of 2023. There won't be a lot of text in this post, I will let the images do most of the talking. Enjoy!
We start in Scotland where we saw this wonderful lake with some ice on it during on of our drives across the Highlands.
Scotland had a lot to offer at the beginning of the year. We were treated to many rainbows and I like the contrast with the road on the following photo.
The next stop is Bad Homburg, just outside of Frankfurt. It was a winter day and the hard light flooded this little Russian Orthodox church.
We move to Warsaw where I took another photo in harsh winter daylight. I like how this photo captures the dynamic of Warsaw with the old and the new in one frame.
I found some warmth cycling in the Provence where I captured this pretty hill town. It won't be the last cycling trip photo in this list...
The next stop is Ireland where this abandoned car caught my eye. We had to make a U-turn on a very narrow road to drive back but it was all worth it.
Back in Amsterdam, I was going for a walk around my neighborhood and the light was very soft in the later afternoon. I took this photo of the most picturesque building in my area.
We go back to Scotland for what is a very touristy photo but I don't really care. It was fun to take this shot of the train made famous by the Harry Potter movies.
The final photo from our second Scotland trip of 2023 is one of my most favorite places, the Isle of Skye. I had to climb down on a ledge (all perfectly safe) to frame this tree that was growing out of the side of the hill.
Meanwhile, back in the Netherlands, I attempted to do some street photography in The Hague. I certainly am no Alan Schaller, or Jonas Rask, but I liked how Lou Reed looks from the album cover towards the couple in the foreground.
We stay close to The Hague with the next shot I took at the sea promenade.
The next photo was taken in Munich as the spring was slowly turning in to summer. I shot this close to a hedge and the green works nicely with the blue sky.
Another cycling adventure took me past this ultra narrow building in downtown Amsterdam.
The famous Sutro Tower in San Francisco was beautifully lit as part of an art project. I could not resist taking a photo.
We will stay in the very photogenic surroundings of San Francisco with the next photo that I took during an unusual cloudless day on the bike.
Next, we have two photos of the Golden Gate bridge. One is a classic angle, the other less so.
A quick stop in Munich led me to one of my favorite photographic spots in that city. Day or night and whatever the weather, you can be sure to find people surfing the Eisbach.
I once again saw a nice hedge and took the following shot in between two people with just enough of the museum to appear over the hedge.
We are now in deep summer and our next stop in the photographic recap of 2023 is the United States. The roadtrip we took through Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah is probably the most visually stunning journey I have even been on. The first photo is taken at the Great Sand Dunes national park in Colorado. This photo is probably my favorite of 2023.
The next photo shows the bizarre landscapes you can find in the Petrified Forest national park in New Mexico. Truly otherworldly.
The sunsets in Sedona, Arizona are quite extraordinary.
After all that natural beauty, the city of Salt Lake was maybe not the highlight of the trip but I did like how this building was backlit by the afternoon sun,
Back home in Amsterdam, I took this photo in the lovely Vondelpark.
The next stop was Mallorca where we were treated to some wonderful late fall sunshine.
I really enjoyed playing around with the amazing stabilization of the latest Micro Four Thirds sensors which allow you to take photos like this handheld.
Or this.
The last photo I took in Mallorca was this one. Right before I crashed hard and broke my collarbone. If I had to fall somewhere, I guess picking this road which is arguably one of the most beautiful in the world, was not a bad choice.
I have recovered somewhat by now which means I had one more good photo in me of this Christmas tree. See you next year!
