Two lenses to capture the 2026 Winter Olympics

It has been freaking hot in the Netherlands which might have prompted me to write this post about..... the 2026 Winter Olympics. I wanted to write this post right after our visit but somehow it never happened. Maybe it is my subconscious desire for cold that made me think of it right now.

My wife and I are big fans of biathlon. We follow the season on TV (thank you ARD/ZDF) and root for our favorite athletes from a distance. But this year, we got a chance to see them up close at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

I was really looking forward to photograph the event and it lived up to the hype. Seeing the athletes go from a heart rate well north of 180 bpm and calm themselves down before they shoot the 5 targets in either standing or lying position was impressive from up close.

I took two Sony A7C bodies with me. A Sony A7CR and an A7Cii to be precise. On it, I had the Sony 24-50mm F2.8 and the Zeiss Batis 135mm F2.8. This gave me great coverage with a relatively compact setup and I was also not being the overeager amateur, annoying everyone in the stands.

If you ever have the chance to see a biathlon event, I can highly recommend it!
